[Personality]
Growing up among the Outcasts has left Varian an incredibly ill mannered and hot tempered boy. He tends to be extremely emotion driven, and because of that can be unpredictable and unstable in his actions and ideas. He has no memory of anything beyond his time with Alvin and his group, and the rough and more often than not abusive treatment of the boy has left him mistrustful of everyone around him, sure that turning his back on anyone will earn a knife in it.

But beyond the bad and prickly parts of the boy lies a genius beyond his time. He is a brilliant builder and an even more impressive alchemist, able to concoct all manner of mixtures with various uses from mundane to devastating. He has a passion for learning and is sometimes reckless in his pursuit of knowledge. Everything he needs to know can often be discovered through smell and taste, which leads to more than a few mishaps along the way.

Growing up with the view predominantly being a prison cell with no one around him but Alvin and his men have left Varian with little to know grasp on social cues, he has no understanding of altruism or simple doing something nice because it's a nice thing to do. Because of this, he tends to approach any kind of kind act with suspicion of downright hostility, and becomes extremely uncomfortable. He's not a bad or unkind person, he simply has no frame of reference or understanding of how people outside of the Outcasts live.

Varian's relationship with dragons is terrible to say the least. He sees them as savage and wholly hostile creatures, thanks to the way he's been groomed and raised. He isn't entirely beyond saving though, and need only recover from the automatic hostility and fight or flight instinct towards them. As of right now though, he would just as sooner kill a dragon out of fear for his own life than ever even dream of trying to befriend it.

[Backstory]
Varian didn’t originally come from the Barbaric Archipelago, he was a foreigner from another place who’s ship was blow out that way and inevitably crashed on a very foreboding island. He was only a small child at the time, barely out of infancy, and the only survivor of the shipwreck.

The island the ship crashed on wasn’t uninhabited however, and a woman of the Outcasts took pity on the pathetic scrap and took him in. He was raised under Alvin the Treacherous and the Outcasts, and as such has grown into a boy with absolutely no manners or sense of honor. He’s feisty and full of piss and vinegar, until someone actually calls his bluff, then he tends to lose his bravado and hide.

He developed a love for alchemy, and quickly became incredibly proficient at it. Alvin saw opportunity in the boy’s strange and sometimes devastating abilities, and uses him to concoct dangerous poisons and chemical bombs. One would think working so close with the leader would be a beneficial arrangement, but Alvin is an unforgiving man, and tends to mistreat and bully the boy.
